Dubai Duty Free opened for business on December 20th 1983 and has grown to become the No. 1 Airport retailer in the world with a turnover of US$1.14 billion in 2009.
Employing over 3,500 people, the operation has consistently raised the benchmark for airport retailing in the Middle East. Its founding principal of offering international travelers a wide range of quality merchandise and a high level of service in a shopper-friendly environment still holds true to this day.
To date, Dubai Duty Free has received more than 150 awards from industry, media and government bodies which bear testimony to the operations retail success. This includes the recent Global Traveler USA Award for ‘Best Duty Free Shopping’ which was announced in New York. In last year, Dubai Duty Free walked away with the Frontier Award for ‘Best Marketing Campaign by a Retailer’ for its unique 25th Anniversary campaign.
2009 has also been a year of personal recognition for Colm McLoughlin and in December last year, at the inaugural Arabian Sponsorship Awards held to coincide with the Arabian Sponsorship Forum (14-15th December), he was presented with the “Lifetime Services to the Arabian Sponsorship Industry Award”. Mr. McLoughlin was also named ‘Duty Free Manager of the Year’ in the Aviation Business awards. In April, he was honoured with a ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ in the Middle East Events Industry while in October; he was hailed ‘Businessman of the Year’ in the 3rd Middle East Business Achievement awards.
Dubai Duty Free has announced its support for the 2010 Dubai Summer Surprises by renewing its sponsorship for the seventh consecutive year by introducing a consumer promotion that will see shoppers win a grand sum over the 7-week period.
